Dorothy B. Lester, 87, longtime resident of Sullivan, passed away on June 11, 2017 at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene after years of declining health.

Dorothy was born August 26, 1929 in Riverhead, Long Island, NY to Catherine M. (McMahon) and Oren H. Bagley. She attended Seton Hall high school in Riverhead, and spent her younger adult life on eastern Long Island before moving to Sullivan in 1973.

Dorothy married her high school love, Francis G. Lester of Holtsville, NY, and was married for 45 years until his passing in 1995.

Together, Dorothy and Francis owned and operated Lester's Village Store in Sullivan from 1973 to 1985. Before moving to New Hampshire, she worked at New York Bell as an operator, and drove a school bus. After selling the store she worked seasonally at Brookstone in Peterborough, and sewed for Burdick Chocolate in Walpole.

In her earlier years she enjoyed typing Braille books for the blind, and had a passion for sewing doll dresses for babies-in-need at a hospital in Harlem.

She was an avid knitter, quilter, and seamstress, enjoyed planning quilts and baby sweaters for each of her grandchildren, and getting lost in thousand-page books.

Having an affinity for words, Dorothy will be remembered for her quick wit and grammar play. She had a great love for animals, and her pets were always treated as family members.

Dorothy will be missed by her three daughters: Diane F. Messina of Sullivan; Katharine C. Brosseau and her husband Mark Brosseau of Sullivan; and Constance D. Lester of Peterborough; five grandchildren: Brianne, Keegan, Caleb, and Christian Brosseau, and Claudia Messina. She is survived by her brother, William Bagley of Riverhead, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews in Texas.

She is predeceased by her husband, Francis G. Lester, and sister Elizabeth Smotherman of San Antonio, Texas.

In keeping with Dorothy's wishes there will be no services.

Donations may be made in Dorothy B. Lester's name to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey, NH 03446 (www.MonadnockHumaneSociety.org).
